”Grønttovet” used to be the vegetable trading center of Copenhagen, but the whole area is currently being transformed into a new residential area. The concept of the ”Green-tower” is based on that history, and the idea that all apartments should have the opportunity to grow their own vegetables. All apartments in the tower have their own small garden, creating a very unique housing quality.
Creating good usable outdoor space in a high building is a challenge, and often balconies in a high-rise is difficult to utilize because of the strong winds. By adding a greenhouse directly to the apartments and creating a useful "exterior"-space, it will now be possible to grow vegetables and enjoy being ”outside” in a tower. With this new tower typology it will be possible to enjoy the benefits of a garden – while at the same time enjoying the magnificent views of the city. The greenhouse will be constructed as a single-layer glass system in which a sliding door provide access from the balcony, and the panels in the greenhouse can be opened up to create a more balcony-like situation on a hot summer day.
The green element is not only used as an aesthetic addition to the tower, it also becomes a functional and sustainable addition to the individual homes.
