The Våler school project is a combined school and community HOUSE, all built out of locally produced wood. The new buildings bring all parts of the school together in one central location. with a high degree of DOUBLE FUNCTIONALITY the school can be used in MULTIPLE ways, during the school hours as well as EVENINGS AND weekends.
The center of the school is a glass building containing a giant bookcase. Here you WILL find the main entrance to the school, the public library and other community house functions. During the dark winter months the community house will light up giving the project it's name “The Våler Lantern”.
From the center of the school, FOUR pathways lead out to the surrounding village and nearby river, making the community house the natural meeting point in the town.
From this central spot, you have access to all parts of the school as well as to a viewing platform on top which offers A magnificent view over the wooded landscape.
The project was awarded in an open international competition.
