Bindings Werk- Pioneer Forest

On the occasion of the World Capital of Architecture 2023, a new temporary green urban space welcomes the many guests and actors of Refshaleøen.

The pioneer forest celebrates and emphasizes the post-industrial qualities of the area and the importance of nature for future development.

The pioneer forest resembles a landscape type which can often be witnessed in Refshaleøen, of trees occupying unbuilt areas. It consists of 40 trees in plant boxes located on a grid that relates to the architecture of the historical administration building. The foyer of the building itself becomes a part of the installation, dissolving the boundaries between outdoor and indoor spaces.

During the Year of Architecture the elements of Bindings Werk can be moved around, showing different possibilities for urban nature and public spaces design.

The space was designed by Urban Power and the local firms Juul Frost Arkitekter and AI Arkitekter og Ingeniører, in collaboration with Refshaleøens Ejendomsselskab and Malmos Anlægsgartner and is going to be in place until the end of October 2023.
