Gjøvikstranda

The project aims to reconnect the city center with the scenic Lake Mjøsa. The post-industrial shore has been abandoned for decades, and a strategy for activation is urgently needed while waiting for permanent solutions to address the contaminated subterrain and the risk of flooding.

The shore is revitalized through temporary interventions that have public and cultural appeal, showcasing the site’s qualities and breaking down the mental barriers between the city center and the shore.

URBAN POWER developed the plan for the temporary park by Lake Mjøsa as part of the activation strategy for the Municipality of Gjøvik. The focal point of the plan is the transformation of the abandoned facilities that were originally used for wood chip production. The renovated facilities create an informal and distinctive event hall for various public activities, such as concerts and exhibitions, year-round.

The indoor space is part of a larger, cohesive urban area, defined by covered areas, pavilions, street furniture, vegetation, and trees. This network reconnects the city with the lake and raises public awareness of the site’s potential.
