The former shipyard at Refshaleøen has a very large amount of historic buildings, with a high degree of identity. The buildings must be transformed with respect for history and at the same time create the base for a new vibrant urban district.
This awarded competition proposal, forms a concept for a main urban structure of the historic site.
Based on the linear production line, a new urban center is created. It is formed by a crossing point between culture and nature.
A connection from East to West is created through several of the historic buildings. This new main inner street forms the access to most of the island’s cultural functions. The focus is on creating a series of cultural and recreational spaces that aim to strengthen the urban quality of Refshaleøen and provide both associations and companies the opportunity to inhabit the area. By merging these functions in one axis, an urban hierarchy emerges. Here the many cultural institutions can benefit from each other.
A green urban space will be created north to south along Refshalevej, forming a strong green and lush contrast to the historic industrial buildings and the future dense city surrounding it.
