Våler school and library

The combined school and library in Våler represents the local environment by being exclusively built in locally sourced wood.

The pleasures of learning is physically manifested in the presence of a gigantic bookshelf in the foyer, around which the stairs fold, creating spaces to sit.

In the winter months, the building’s bright lights act as a beacon to be seen from all corners of the town.

URBAN POWER designed this awarded competition entry in an open international competition.

The design emphasises the importance of creating synergy between the community center, library and school –  well as the rest of the town by being visible and well-connected with roads and paths.

Placed centrally, the tall structure has a great view of the river and forested hills, making it a natural meeting point.

Many parts of the building can easily be double-functional by interchanging between school and library functions, as the activities of the two user groups will naturally differ from daytime and weekday to evening and weekends.
