Papirøen

Challenging the usual tear-down/build-up practise of transformed industrial areas, this urban plan preserves the raw and unique framework of Papirøen, letting the popular street food market and contemporary art hall and unique event spaces stay where they are.

Housing is arranged on top of the flat roofed halls, accompanied by recreational landscapes in level with the apartments, while the lively and quirky street environment that made this island attractive, can thrive on the harbour level below.

URBAN POWER developed this proposal for Papirøen teamed up with the dutch architectural practice MVRDV.

In respect of the industrial heritage and the newfound cultural importance for Copenhageners, as much of the ambiance of Papirøen should be preserved as it is being developed.

Therefore, the streets and facades of the industrial buildings are kept, with the strategy being to build vertically, but in different levels to create open space and a view of the harbour for all residents. Much of the lifted area is constructed as a roof-top landscape, improving the quality of life in the otherwise hard surfaced environment.
