Lautrupvang

The new masterplan and housing project transforms the Lautrupvang area from a monofunctional business district into a more vibrant, diverse neighborhood. By integrating business, housing, and nearby educational facilities, the project creates a cohesive urban environment.

URBAN POWER developed the masterplan and local plan, and led all architectural phases from initial design to construction documentation for both buildings and landscape

Located near Technical University DTU Campus Ballerup, Borupgaard Gymnasium, and several of Denmark’s major knowledge-intensive companies, the new area serves as a cornerstone in integrating business, research, education, and residential life.

The site plan is based on the existing structuralist architecture by inverting the open courtyards into new freestanding and downscaled residential volumes. There is a clear distinction between the existing commercial buildings and the new residential area, where height, materiality, and outdoor spaces provide a distinct identity. The landscape unifies the development around a red and green park strip, complemented by balconies that soften the building volumes within an otherwise very angular context.

The carbon footprint is reduced through conscious material choices. Central to this effort is the optimized use of calcium silicate blocks as the primary load-bearing material. By integrating the structural design from the outset, the project has been optimized to reach a height of six stories.
As the construction reaches its full height in early 2027, it will be the tallest residential block masonry building in Denmark. Combined with several other initiatives regarding geometry and materials, the carbon footprint is low enough to meet climate requirements that do not take effect until 2029.
